Description American Electric Power Company, Inc., a public utility holding company, engages in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power to retail customers. The company generates electricity using coal and lignite, natural gas, nuclear energy, and hydroelectric energy. It also supplies and markets electric power at wholesale to other electric utility companies, municipalities, and other market participants. As of December 31, 2012, the company owned and leased approximately 37,300 megawatts of domestic generation capacity. In addition, it transports coal and dry bulk commodities primarily on the Ohio, Illinois, and lower Mississippi rivers. The company owns and leases approximately 2,600 barges, 45 towboats, and 25 harbor boats. It operates primarily in the states of Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
